'CODE NAME: The Quiet Man' Stroopwafel Herfstbok – A brew with a powerful legacy.

Henry Hulstein with his wife, Grace, who is holding their torn-up mortgage, which had been paid off as a gift from a grateful Jewish community for their rescue efforts during WWII.

December 18, 2024 – Victoria BCHerald Street Brew Works is proud to announce the return of one of our most cherished brews: CODE NAME: The Quiet Man' Stroopwafel Herfstbok. This marks the second release of this unique Dutch-style beer, and for good reason. Crafted in memory of our head brewer Ryan Bangma’s Dutch heritage and the remarkable legacy of his great-grandparents, who were actively involved in the Jewish Rescue Committee during World War II, this beer carries deep personal and historical significance.

This special Herfstbok (strong, fall beer) has been carefully brewed to honour the heritage of Bangma’s maternal grandparents, the Hulstein family. Infused with rich flavors of caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon, it recreates the beloved stroopwafel – a traditional Dutch treat – in liquid form. The result is a smooth, balanced beer that captures the essence of Dutch culture and the warmth of cherished family memories.

"We never brew the same beer twice. Only variations of some of our more popular brew styles" said Bangma, Head Brewer at Herald Street Brew Works. "But this one deserves an exception– it's a tribute to my great grandparents’ courage and the sacrifices they made during one of the darkest times in history. It’s a story that I don’t want to be forgotten with a powerful message about community. You can expect this one to be released just before Remembrance Day every year."
